FH Education & YorkU EUC
This spring, FH ESL students & staff stepped out of the classroom and into the Maloca Community Gardens at York University EUC (Environmental and Urban Change) faculty — a hands-on program designed to teach gardening skills, environmental awareness, and the joy of growing together.
What we did? A LOT!
🧤 Got our hands dirty learning to use tools like shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows.
🌱 Flipped the soil to refresh the land — we removed old compacted soil, laid down wood mulch to retain moisture & block weeds.
🪴 Mixed the perfect soil blend:
60% organic compost + 40% topsoil = fertile ground for future veggies!
🥕 Gave two plants a ‘home makeover’:
Instead of replanting them, we loosened their soil, pulled the weeds, and built a cozy new bed using cardboard, mulch, and fresh soil. Think of it as interior design… for root veggies.

🏫 After gardening, Brittany from EUC recruitment team gave us a tour of York’s Keele campus.
Highlights included:
🔧 Lassonde School of Engineering (robots & space tech)
📚 Scott Library (book heaven + study hideaways)
🏠 Student Residences (so many options!)
💬 Student Centre & YU Connect — where passions meet community.
We weren’t just tired — we were inspired.
💡 We learned language through doing.
🌍 We felt more connected — to the earth, to each other, and to our future.
This is just the beginning. More seeds are growing — in the garden, and in our hearts. 🌼
